Sitting Quite Still

I wrote and recorded this in November, 2006 for a couple of reasons. First, my friend Stan Swanson played some tunes he'd written on a guitar tuned to a low C tuning, which I had never considered. Made such a cool deep sound that I thought I'd like to try it. But I did not want to retune my Takamine that low.

Then I remembered a guitar my father and I built in 1964. That is, he built it and I brought him coffee and held tools. It's the guitar I played all through high school in folk groups like "The New Lulazick Singers" and the "Front Porch Majority" (maybe it was the Back Porch Minority. If one of them was famous, we were the other one. Stan Swanson, Berta Keith, Mike Davis, Nancy Ogle, Dean Reiter) I think that's what we called the jug band we assembled for hootenannies.

The guitar is huge, about the size of a mariachi bass guitar, and the strings are a good quarter inch off the fretboard. Neither my father nor I knew much about the fine points of the luthier's art back then, but the beast is sturdy and has a very low sound. I decided I would restring it, learn a couple of chords in open C. So I did.

As I was fooling with it, limited by my own ability to play that instrument in that tuning, I got to thinking about all the young Americans stuck overseas right now, and decided to write a song from the perspective of one of them. This song is the result. What you hear is me singing in the key of C, which turns out to be high for me, and playing that guitar my father and I made the year after JFK died, four years before the Summer of Love. I was too young to go to Vietnam at that point, but I remember admiring some of the older guys, great students and athletes, who had the courage to enlist. That old guitar has seen a lot, but I could have written this song back when it still smelled like sawdust and varnish.
