The Coquille River (statistics and a map) is large enough for small boats, and deep enough that every now and then you'll see a sturgeon the size of a linebacker roll its back out of the water, looking like a prehistoric submarine. Just a few miles down river there's a public boat ramp. You're close enough to the ocean that the tide coming in appears to reverse the flow of the river for a while every day. Although the fresh water blocks most saltwater from coming upstream, sometimes driftwood or other interesting things will actually float upstream at high tide, only to drift past a while later going back down to the ocean. |
