AThe Barefoot Fisherman: A fishing book for kids
sample from the book
The young boy made his way through the weeds as the sun rose slowly over the horizon. Grasshoppers and beetles shook off the morning dew and started about their daily routines. Soon the weeds gave way to cattails yet the marshy land did not slow the boys approach. One of his feet went splashing down into a hidden water hole. He pulled it out with a sucking sound as the pond mud tried to hold onto his shoe. The sound of his sneaker in the mud startled a frog, which jumped into the pond.
He had fished this pond a couple of times and never had much luck. As he stood at the waters edge, his shadow fell upon a turtle swimming in the water. The turtle disappeared in the blink of an eye. The boy looked through a cluttered tackle box, and selected a large metal spoon. When he was done tying it on there was a knot that looked like spaghetti around a fork.
He cast the lure as far as he could, confident that the biggest fish were in the middle of the lake.
He fished for a while, watching water-bugs swim among the duckweed. Through the water he saw a crawdad emerge from under a rock kicking up little puffs of mud-smoke with its tail. Somewhere in the cattails he heard the big splash of a bass eating something.
He knew that under the waters ripples lurked huge catfish. The splash of the bass told him that the fish were hungry, yet he still had no bites.
After a hundred or so casts and twice as many mosquito bites the boy decided to call it a morning. He gathered up his fishing pole and reassembled his tackle box. It had been a pleasant trip but as he walked along the dirt road back to civilization, he wore a frown. If he could just figure out how to catch those fish...Chapter One: Fishing is Fun
Have you ever filled a blender with dead grasshoppers in order to make the flavor-juice for your carp bait? I have.
On rainy mornings I walk the streets with a coffee can picking up earthworms for my afternoon fishing trips. When worms are scarce, squid tentacles work to catch largemouth bass. And nearly any bait will catch the strange fish that live and feed on the bottom of the ocean.
Fishing is a mixture of all the things that are fun about being a kid. There are bugs, and animals and hope and excitement, there are sometimes stars and friends and every fishing trip somehow ends up as a story that you will tell over and over again.
If you like adventure youll like to fish. Whether you are going after the ferocious largemouth bass or the bottom-dwelling whiskered catfish, you will come home with dirt- covered hands and a smile on your face.
Anyone can fish but some people catch more fish than others. This is because they understand fish better. They have an advantage. They can look at a lake or river and tell where the fish are, what kind of fish there are, and what they are eating. They know the secrets of fishing. Luckily, anybody can learn these secrets. Some people have parents or grandparents who can pass these secrets on to them. Some people dont know anybody who can tell them where to find the biggest trout in a river or how cloud-cover affects fishing action. These people must learn on their own. Its a shame because they will not catch nearly as many fish. It will take them years to learn through trial and error and they might even get discouraged and quit fishing for lack of success. Well, I love fishing and I couldnt stand to see that happen to anybody. I am one of the lucky ones who had a dad and two grandpas who taught me the secrets of fishing. This book contains the secrets that will allow you to catch as many fish as anyone, probably a lot more.
