A number of eighth graders have been forced to write book reviews of Algebra Unplugged. We have included them in the back of the latest printing of the book, and will put some on here as well pretty soon. My favorite is from Tyrone Williams, who was at the time of the review in Dr. James H. Snyder's 8th grade math class in Nashville, Tennesee:
"If I didn't read this book, I would have failed this class because all Marcus and I used to do in the class was clown around and talk about how good Tabitha looks. So I would like to thank you for giving me this book to read."
We suspect Tabitha thanks Dr. Snyder as well.
We discovered this review online:
“Algebra Unplugged”, by Kenn Amdahl & Jim Loats, is also absolutely fabulous for a humerous overview of material covered in an Algebra One course (it was a great refresher for me, too). The authors talk about the danger of memorizing the quadratic equation without an understanding of the underlying theory--they say it is the biggest reason kids crash and burn in higher math after Algebra One.
