About Clearwater

Kenn Amdahl hatched Clearwater Publishing Company in 1990 to publish his book There Are No Electrons: Electronics for Earthlings after 89 publishing companies and agents rejected it. That book has been selling steadily ever since, with total sales approaching 100,000 copies. It is often credited with inspiring all the books for Dummies and Idiots, although we like to think it was the first bestseller BY a dummy or idiot, unless you count political memoirs. Clearwater was in Broomfield, Colorado (“Where Boulder goes to bowl!”) for over 25 years. In 2016, it moved to Eugene Oregon. If you’re looking for a DIFFERENT Clearwater, try looking here.

We remain a small but plucky company. Think of Clearwater as that tiny family-owned restaurant hidden far from a shopping mall that you only tell your best friends about. Or that quaint winery you discovered on vacation, the one housed in an old church on a dead-end street, run by three retired sisters. You know what we mean.

Or, you could think of it as one guy publishing the books he writes and managing to make a living at it for over two decades. Whichever image works for you.

Most of our books explain dull subjects in a clear, entertaining way. They are aimed at people who love to read and who learn best by reading. Many people read our books just for the fun of it, without any burning desire to learn electronics or algebra. But most buy our books out of desperation, when they’re failing a class and need someone to explain things to them in a way they can understand.

Our titles are recommended by Encyclopedia Britannica, The Whole Earth Review, National Science Teachers Association, The Math Teacher, and dozens of others. We ship most orders within 24 hours.
